Young philanthropists support Flood Recovery Fund

16th April 2014

Pupils at Ysgol Dinas Bran in Llangollen have raised a fantastic £860 for the Foundation’s Floods Recovery Fund, a Fund set up in response to the extensive floods and storm damage across Wales to help strengthen communities as they recover from the hardship and challenges.

Teacher Rebecca Mansfield explained why the Flood Recovery Fund was their chosen charity and why she thinks it’s important to encourage pupils to think about philanthropy.

“We’re all part of the broader community, and it’s important that our students know that they can, and should, make a difference to others. It is our role to educate our pupils in the broadest sense, and sometimes this charity work is as important as what we teach in class, particularly in terms of life skills and understanding our role in society.  We all saw locally the devastation of the floods and this brought home to us that there are many needs in our own community.  That’s why we were keen to support the Foundation’s Flood Recovery Fund as well as Sport Relief.”

Foundation staff were invited to a school assembly where Sian Stacey, the Foundation’s Development Manager, presented a certificate to the fundraisers, and thanked the pupils, “It was such a pleasure to update the pupils on our Flood Recovery Fund and to congratulate them on being young philanthropists.  We so admired the energy and commitment of the pupils, the sixth form charity group, and the two lead teachers, and to see how philanthropy is at the heart of the school’s ethos.”

The four six formers who form the core of the school’s charity group were delighted to learn more about the work of the Flood Recovery Fund, and are now concentrating on revision for their AS levels.

Pupils at Ysgol Dinas Bran will now be focussing on broader aspects of philanthropy – volunteering and giving in kind. The charity group has decided to support its local Foodbank by collecting donated food and also enabling students to volunteer at the centre.

Thank you to the pupils and teachers of Ysgol Dinas Bran for joining Wales’ community of philanthropists and for raising money for our Flood Recovery Fund.  And good luck for the exams!
